MEET JESSICA

Board-Certified Music Therapist

Jessica Steinhebel, MA, NMT, MT-BC, MT-BC/L in Oregon

Hi, I’m Jessica, and welcome to Sound Wellness Music Therapy, LLC! I have dreamed about combining my two passions of music and helping others since I first picked up the flute over 30 + years ago. My relationship with music has provided connections to other people’s stories through music making, composing, and performing. My dream was to pursue music therapy studies right after high school, but life has a funny way of taking you on a different path.

I went on to complete a graduate degree in Music Composition while working in the college student services fields of financial aid, academic advising, and scholarships. I loved working with students and their families, but always held onto my music therapy dream. I took a leap and went back to school. While working full-time, I completed my Music Therapy Equivalency. I completed a hospice and palliative care music therapy internship here in Portland with Seasons Hospice which focused on providing therapy to adults and elders living in end of life care and dealing with chronic pain. After finishing my studies and passing the national board certification exam, Sound Wellness Music Therapy, LLC came into fruition. In addition to Sound Wellness, I am also a Music Therapist at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Oregon where I primarily work with 37o Aid and Assist patients. I use voice, flute, guitar, piano, ukulele, and percussion as tools in my music therapy practice.

My therapeutic approach pulls from many different philosophies depending on the needs of who I am working with, and tend to draw from humanistic and psychodynamic depending on those needs. I strive for a holistic approach that focuses on strength based experiences.

I am continuously humbled and honored to be invited into the stories of my clients and to use music to meet their needs. There are so many moments where music has helped a client forget about acute pain, created a safe space for a client to share feelings, or brought about a smile to a student's face after composing their first melody. I always take a moment to think, “Wow, I get this precious opportunity to support this person through music.”

My promise to you is that whether you are a music therapy client, music wellness class participant, or connecting for an event, I’m committed to support you in striving for wellness through music. My hope is that music will become a daily and enjoyable part of your wellness routine.
